London Gershwin Players – A celebration of Gershwin and the 100th anniversary of Rhapsody in Blue

Saturday, January 27

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the composition of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ in January 1924, Musica Viva welcomes the 24-member London Gershwin Players and conductor Mark Forkgen in an upbeat All-Gershwin Evening featuring an Overture to the Musical ‘Girl Crazy’, ‘Porgy and Bess’, ‘Fantasy’, ‘American in Paris’, and a performance of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ with Robert Taub, Director of Music at the University of Plymouth on piano in an original rarely-heard Paul Whiteman Band version on the song.

Both Mark Forkgen and Robert Taub particularly like this version, as it has a sharper edge and greater spontaneity compared to the more often performed large orchestral version. Gershwin composed ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ in a frenzied few weeks, and its first performance, a storied occasion with Gershwin himself at the piano, Stravinsky and other luminaries in the audience, was an immediate success.
