Good Vibrations

Friday, June 17

Women’s Open Mic Night

Join Good Vibrations Women’s Writers Group for our first open mic night at Leadworks on 17th June.

From 7-11pm, this inclusive writers’ group made up of underrepresented genders will share their beautiful and original work in a fascinating and exciting event, the first of its kind in Plymouth and free and open to all.

Given the growth of a women’s movement in Plymouth, through such events as the commission investigating Violence Against Women and Girls, a plethora of International Women’s Day events and the protest movement to End Violence Against Women and Girls, the theme for the evening and the creative work presented will be ‘safety’.

Hand-made and decorated postboxes designed and made by artists in the group will be available in Leadworks and at the Plot in the lead-up to the event and women will be able to post their poetry on the theme to form part of a collaborative work which will be painted onto T-shirts worn by the group on the night.

“Good Vibrations is a space for women writers, including trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming women to share all forms of the written word in a supportive and collaborative space. We support existing and new writers, providing opportunities for members of Good Vibrations to practice, improve and find their voice.” Helen Moore, founder, poet and community gardener.

The event will kick off with pre-booked slots featuring work by well known local writers including Helen Moore, Samantha Carr, Jo Higson and the current Plymouth Laureate of Words Laura Horton.

During the break, there will be a chance to hear recordings of poetry from the Good Vibrations WhatsApp group, where members share new work on a regular basis. There will then be an open mic for newcomers.

The evening will be rounded off by a facilitated discussion on safety and what it means to people led by Laura Ashenford.

Date: Friday 17th June

Price: Free

Venue: Leadworks, 170 Rendle St, Stonehouse, Plymouth PL1 1TP

About Good Vibrations

Good Vibrations is a welcoming, safe and inclusive group with members who are women, trans women and non-binary working together in a creative space. It meets once a month at Leadworks and the group’s work has been published by Take a Part’s Coxside Magazine, exhibited at the Arts Institute as part of the Arts Council Collection ‘Breaking the Mould’ exhibition of women’s sculpture and will shortly be released in the Stonehouse Voice as the culmination of a series of workshops run by Jo Higson on behalf of Literature Works. The open mic event is funded by the Stronger North Stonehouse project.
