Cosmic Kitchen is excited to announce the debut of Plymouth’s newest spoken word event: Cosmic Rhymes!
Taking place within the atmospheric interior of the restaurant, Cosmic Rhymes is an opportunity both for budding writers to come and share their work on our open mic, and for fans of poetry and spoken word to enjoy some of that live poetry goodness that has been missing from our lives for far too long.
Doors will open from 8pm, and the poetry will kick off at half past. The night will consist of two 25-minute open mic sections, interceded by a ten-minute break, and followed by a headline set from our guest performer for the evening. The entertainment will end at around 10:30pm. Tickets will be available via Fatsoma or on the door (cash only), at £5/£4 with an NUS card.
For our first event, our guest performer is none other that MATT HARVEY! Writer, poet, enemy of all that’s difficult and upsetting, Matt’s way with words has taken him from Totnes to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships via Saturday Live, the Edinburgh Festival and the Work section of the Guardian. He is host of Wondermentalist – Radio 4’s comedy-infused, musically enhanced interactive poetry cabaret – and author of The Hole in the Sum of my Parts (Poetry Trust), Where Earwigs Dare (Green Books) and Mindless Body Spineless Mind.
“Very funny…” Independent
“…not only funny but tender and true” Guardian
“fabulously understated” Dorset Echo
Open Mic:
If you would like to perform at Cosmic Rhymes, there will be ten 5-minute slots up for grabs. Sign-up will be on the door, and the evening’s performers will be selected randomly via a ‘names-out-of-a-hat’ system.
At Cosmic Rhymes, we love and appreciate all who choose to give up five minutes of their time to entertain us with their words. In order to keep the evening moving however, we ask our open mic-ers to stick to their five-minute slots. If you do start to run over, there will be a ten-second grace period, followed by a gentle musical reminder to bring your performance to a close.
Travel:
Cosmic Kitchen is located on Sir John Hawkins Square, Palace Street, Plymouth, PL1 2AY. It is accessible easily on foot, and Plymouth train station is approx. a 16-minute walk. Paid parking is available close by in The Barcode and on St Andrew’s Street.
Food & Drink:
If you would like to eat first, book a table through Cosmic Kitchen’s Resdiary app, or over the phone. Tickets for the event will be available separately via Fatsoma, or on the door (cash only). Drinks will be available before the event and during the interval.
Currently, Cosmic Kitchen is sadly not wheelchair accessible, due to steps leading into the restaurant. We are working to fix this issue. If you have any other accessibility needs, please let us know, and we will do our utmost to ensure you have a comfortable, enjoyable experience.’
