Christmas light switch on

Thursday, November 18

Plymouth’s Christmas holiday calendar officially kicks off with the switch-on of this year’s brand new beautiful Christmas lights on Thursday 18 November.  It also marks the start of festive late night shopping every Thursday in the lead up to Christmas.

Don’t miss the big switch-on moment, which is due to take place between 6pm and 6.30pm! The stars of Plymouth’s health service – local NHS staff – will be celebrated this festive season as they take on the honour of switching on the Christmas lights.

Entertainment

There will be an exciting programme of free, family-friendly entertainment to enjoy on stage in the Piazza from 4pm. Enjoy live music, with performances of carols and popular Christmas songs from local groups and choirs as well as a sprinkling of magic from the Enchanted Entertainment Princesses.

Here’s the running order:

  • Glen Park Primary School
  • St Matthew’s CoE Primary School
  • Morley Meadow Primary
  • Stonehouse Community Voices Choir
  • Plymouth Performing Arts Academy
  • Enchanted Entertainment Princesses with Gigi Hobbs
  • PlymKids
  • Lights switch-on by NHS staff (with a visit from Santa!)
  • Joey The Lips

Once the stunning new light displays are illuminating the city centre, popular funk, soul and blues band Joey The Lips will take to the stage for a headline performance, bringing a party to the Piazza and kicking off the festive season in style.

The Lights

The city centre will sparkle extra brightly this festive season with a new and spectacular display of Christmas lights.

The displays will include banners stretched across New George Street and Cornwall Street and sail banners on street lamps throughout the city centre, as well as colourful contemporary lighting displays in the trees in Frankfort Gate, the West End and Armada Way.

A ‘light ceiling’ will cover part of Mayflower Street, with rows of lights stretched across the road. The side of House of Fraser facing Armada Way will also be covered in an impressive light curtain which will feature Christmas messaging and displays.

NHS heroes

The lights are due to be switched on between 6pm and 6.30pm by five superstar staff who work for the NHS in Plymouth. They’ve been nominated by their colleagues for the hard work and dedication they’ve shown throughout the pandemic, and this is our opportunity to say a big thank you! They are:

  • Marie Whitley, former Matron for Home Park Mass Vaccination Centre and Clinical Head of Governance
  • Girish Viswanathan, Consultant Cardiologist and Service Line Director for Cardiology
  • Makala Sperduti, a member of the invaluable Hotel Services Team who provide cleaning and catering for patients
  • Naomi Lean, Team Lead Occupational Therapist for Emergency Care and Covid
  • Kelly James, Staff Nurse
