Plymouth Music Zone

Executive Director, Debbie Geraghty gives a first glimpse of the humble Devonport charity that has won 5 regional and national awards in the past 2 years alone

You know, I’m not sure I’ve ever cried so much as I have in this job. But that’s a good thing. Really. The other week, following her weekly singing session, an 80 year woman called Pat and her guide dog Ziggy popped into Plymouth Music Zone smiling saying she’d like to do a fundraising abseil to raise money for us. The higher the building the better, she said. You see, that’s the sort of thing I mean. To me, that just says it all.

There are so many Pats and so many stories we’d love to share with you because they’re what stoke an infectious passion that infuses everything we try to do with our work at Plymouth Music Zone.  But, in the meantime, let me leave you with a taster of what we actually do – and a sense of what makes our hearts tick…and then you’ll at least know where to find us if you want to hear more.

Plymouth Music Zone’s vision and mission are straight from the heart. We love music. We love people. We love making a difference. Our real passion is combining all three – bringing extraordinary people together through extraordinary musical experiences to enable extraordinary things to happen. Quite simply, Plymouth Music Zone’s vision is of a world where no one feels left out or lonely. A world where the transforming power of music can play its part in developing kind, happy, supportive and creative communities.

Back in 1999, Plymouth Music Zone consisted of just two musicians who worked out of a cupboard in a local authority building, delivering after-school music clubs to 20 primary schools. Today we have a passionate team of 25 members working with over 1000 people a week.  We deliver around 70 weekly music activities in addition to projects, events and specialised training.

We are a compassionate community music charity dedicated to bringing people together to transform lives. Working with others, we reach out to some of the most vulnerable children and adults using highly skilled music leaders who deliver a diverse range of innovative and tailored creative music-making activities. We inspire and empower individuals, families and communities to have a voice and develop and grow. We also encourage and train others who share our passion to bring hope and happiness through the life-changing power of music.
