Arts Writers Group
The Arts Writers Group is a new association which will run a series of residencies and events in the region, helping people to develop their writing skills.
Made In Plymouth is excited to be partnering with the Art Writers Group to deliver workshops, mentoring, skills development and advice for aspiring arts writers in Plymouth and the local region. Starting in January, this project will see two writers-in-residence working with Made In Plymouth to help the city’s critical arts writing scene develop. These experienced writers will be providing advice to aspiring writers, passing on skills and demonstrating how to pitch articles for large arts publications.
The Art Writers Group is a new association formed by Peter Stiles and Josephine Lanyon. The group has its origins in a residential writing week at the Arvon foundation in Devon organised by Visual Art South West in 2014 where writers, artists and arts professionals came together to improve their writing skills under tutors Cherry Smythe and Christopher William Hill. The group have made a successful application to Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts funding stream in order to run a series of residencies and events in West Cornwall, Plymouth and Bristol.
The programme provides opportunities for organisations and individuals to develop their writing skills and will produce text on contemporary art for digital media and print. The application was partnered by Plymouth Culture, Made in Plymouth, Plymouth Arts Centre, Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth City Council, Arnolfini. Spike Island, Situations, St Ives Tate, Newlyn Art Gallery, CAST, Hestercombe and Visual Art South West.
The group’s first steps will be the appointment of four writers in residence for Plymouth, Bristol and West Cornwall – and the Plymouth residency will be advertised in September. They are currently organising a seminar at Hestercombe in Somerset for the 7th December which will look at ways of supporting the development of critical writing in the South West.
Made In Plymouth will host two writers in residence who will provide workshops, monitoring and support to local arts writers looking to develop their writing skills. We will also also receive funding to commission a limited number of articles from our network of contributors. Click here to find out more about becoming a Made In Plymouth contributor.
