Plymouth Artist Elena Brake Developing Live Public Art Performance, “Metal Detectives” for Plymouth Art Weekender
Local artist, Elena Brake is developing a live public art performance to be included in this year’s Plymouth Art Weekender. On the 23rd September, at 4pm, “Metal Detectives” will leave from the sundial in the city centre.
Metal Detectives is a public performance piece by developed by local artist, Elena Brake. Working in collaboration with a small team of emerging artists, Elena hopes to create a spectacle within the ordinary, urban landscape. The group of performers will investigate objects they come across while on a co-ordinated walk through the city. The performers will use magnets to test whether each object is magnetic, regardless of material. The audience are invited on this walk to experience the city in a completely new way.
The performance was first tested in Sefton Park, Liverpool – when a video was produced to document the piece. It is a light-hearted and engaging performance that will encourage the audience to reconsider their everyday surroundings. Elena will be commissioning local film company Round One Films Ltd, to produce a new film of the piece, and is currently raising funds on Crowdfunder to make this a reality. As well as the production of the film, funds raised will also help to produce promotional materials and a zine to document the journey of the project and the performers involved.
“I hope that this performance will be a memorable and enchanting experience for both the audience and the performers.” Elena said, “The artists I am working with realise this project are all emerging artists who are keen to expand their portfolio. I’m really excited to be working with them on upscaling this project since its first performance in Sefton Park, Liverpool, and to bring this to the city of Plymouth.”
Elena Brake lives in Plymouth, and graduated from BA (Hons) Fine Art at Plymouth College of Art in 2016. Since graduating she has shown work and developed performances across the UK, and was a selected artist for UK Young Artists National Festival: Derby 2016.
