This winter, Plymouth’s makers will be shaking off the grey clouds to shine, dazzle, and tempt with an astounding array of handmade designs. Why not challenge yourself to give the big name stores a miss this year – join Made in Plymouth in celebrating local talent as the city hosts two of the most spectacular winter festivals in the South-West!

On the 2nd and 3rd December, the very first Etsy Made Local Plymouth Event will transform Devonport Guildhall in to a winter wonderland of local talent. If you’re not familiar with Etsy, it’s an online marketplace of designers with a huge international following. It celebrates the maker and now is working to bring that celebration back to the local with its weekend of ‘Made Local’ events. All the organisers and makers you’ll meet over the weekend will have two key things in common, they will be local and they will have an online Etsy shop to match their market stall…making it nice and easy for you to nip back online and treat yourself after you’ve finished your generous gift shopping for others!

If you’re worried that the 41 jewellers, printmakers, textile artists, illustrators, soft furnishers and ceramicists aren’t enough to hold your attention then the team would love for you to join one of their free artisan workshops, or maybe take a break from browsing and listen to one of the live acoustic bands who will be playing across the 2 days. If you needed any more incentive to get in and go shopping, then the first 50 people through the doors each day will be rewarded with Christmas fizz and a goody bag full of loveliness from Etsy makers and local businesses including Roly’s Fudge and Portlebay Popcorn.

As the wintery grey starts to creep back and you’re beginning to wonder if the beautiful wintery glitz was ever really real, Plymouth’s makers will swoop down and bring the joy and music back in to your lives with Native Makers and their Winter Festival!

Native Makers is not your run-of-the-mill makers’ market. It truly is a festival and will live up to it’s name by filling every corner of Ocean Studios with stalls, workshops, art, and musicians from across the southwest. Native Makers focuses on high quality, unique and original merchandise and are excited to have selected over 70 makers for you to choose from over the two days. They received applications to exhibit from across the UK, but they believe that ‘South-West is best’ and have pledged to bring you only the best emerging and established designers you can be proud to call neighbours.

In this, the largest Native Makers to date, collaboration has been a key theme. Plymouth College of art will be partnering up to host the childrens’ making area, local brewers and coffee blenders have created special editions of ‘Native Ale’ and ‘Native Coffee’ to celebrate the event, Francli have produced limited edition printed merchandise and the music will be bringing the cheer courtesy of local inde-music festival Knee Deep who will also be launching their early bird tickets on the weekend!

So whether you’re looking for gifts, treating yourself or just in need of a lift from the winter doldrums get out there, because with all this on your doorstep there’s no excuse for boring gifts or winter blues.

Etsy Made Local will run 2/3 December at Devonport Guildhall from 10-4pm and Native Makers will be at Ocean Studios on 16/17th December 10-4pm.
