good things come… is an eye-catching exploration of everyday paraphernalia: a clever play on observation and objects, which makes the ordinary in to art. Curated by Kevin Hunt in collaboration with Hannah Jones, the show posits a scenario that contradicts the quandary of its title by creating a world where the “the size of an object and our attention upon it is intrinsically linked to time”.

The bright room brimming with visual oddities and the twinkly beeps of a lonely, and slightly dilapidated, arcade grabber machine conjures up memories of budget seaside holidays and your dad’s garage workbench making the show feel less like a collection of works than an entire experience. On my way in I was handed a £1 coin to ‘try my luck’ on the aforementioned arcade grabber, my son spent 30 minutes trying to tease a brightly coloured plush from its belly with all the frustration I remember from my childhood.

Sean Edwards: Practice Table (PCA version)

Nothing is what it seems in this exhibition, everywhere you look there is something to play with your understanding of art and object; Vanessa Billy’s bright prawns which are suspended in bags of water like Fairground goldfish actually comment on social and industrial exploitation of resources; Sean Edward’s Practise Table is littered in a seemingly random way with half constructed inventions made from cotton reels, matchboxes and other ‘junk drawer’ objects, each object so tiny you feel the need to crouch down and inspect them to see what each might become or have come from; Jack Lavender brings a wall sculpture which looks almost as if the sea might have sculpted it and washed it up on the south coast somewhere, the lone incense box posing the memory of an era every teenager knew, Greenpeace and saving the environment was a new concept. And then you move around to find Agnes Calf’s Elbows which watches out of the window, inviting you to stop and experience the fairground of your surroundings as you travel around the Gallery, to remember your place in the picture.

 

This show has a mix of style, texture, technique and interactivity that means there is something for everyone; sausages, driftwood, giant After Eight dinner mints and objects the borrowers might have made, come together to create a multi-faceted and multi-layered exhibition that can be accessed by anyone regardless of age, knowledge or culture.

good things come… is a free exhibition showing at The Gallery, Plymouth College of Art until Saturday 4 June 2016 (Monday – Friday at 9am-5pm and Saturday at 10am – 2pm).
